Shed Size Guide: Choosing the Right Footprint

How to pick between 8x10, 10x16, 12x24 and larger sheds based on what you actually store.

Start with the biggest object

Measure the largest thing going in — usually a zero-turn or riding mower — and add three feet of walking room on the access side. That single number kills more bad shed purchases than any other check.

Common footprints and what they hold

An 8x10 holds hand tools, a push mower and a few bins. A 10x12 adds a workbench. A 10x16 handles a riding mower plus seasonal storage. A 12x20 fits a mower, a workbench, a bike rack and shelving with room to move. A 14x28 or larger starts behaving like a small shop.

Think in three years, not today

Nearly every customer who upsized regretted nothing; nearly every customer who bought the minimum called back within two seasons. The incremental cost of two extra feet of length is small compared to replacing the building.

Height matters as much as floor area

A taller wall lets you add loft framing and hang long-handled tools. Eight-foot sidewalls with a steeper roof pitch can double effective storage without expanding the footprint.

Check the pad and the path

Your building needs a level pad two feet wider than the structure on each side, and a clear delivery or construction path. Fences, gates and tree limbs are the most common surprises.
